Abbotsbury Swannery: A Feathered Adventure Near The Swan Inn
Nestled along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, Abbotsbury Swannery is one of the UK’s most unique wildlife experiences. It’s not every day you get to wander through a colony of over 600 free-flying mute swans — unless you live here, in which case it’s practically the village commute.
The swannery was established by Benedictine monks in the 1040s and today remains the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world. You can watch daily mass feedings at noon and 4pm, stroll peacefully beside the Fleet Lagoon, or if you’re lucky (and visit between mid-May and late June), witness the arrival of fluffy cygnets as they hatch in front of your eyes. You’ll be “awww”-ing louder than the kids.
There’s also a willow maze, a swan-themed play area, and plenty of educational bits that make you feel like you’re learning even when you’re just having a lovely day out. It’s a fantastic trip for families, bird nerds, and curious wanderers alike.
And when you’re done watching graceful birds glide around like they own the place, you’re probably going to want a pint. Good news — The Swan Inn is just a short walk away. Cosy, dog-friendly, and fully stocked with proper pub grub and good local ales, it’s the ideal spot to unwind after a day of swan-spotting.
