St Catherine’s Chapel: Abbotsbury’s Hilltop Gem
Perched atop Chapel Hill, St Catherine’s Chapel stands as a testament to medieval devotion and architectural prowess. Built in the 14th century by the monks of Abbotsbury Abbey, this Grade I listed building offers panoramic views of the Dorset coastline, including Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland.
Constructed entirely of stone, including its roof and vaulted ceiling, the chapel’s robust design has withstood the test of time. Its isolated location provided monks a place for pilgrimage and retreat, especially during Lent. Over the years, it also served as a beacon for sailors navigating the treacherous waters of the English Channel.
Legend has it that local maidens would visit the chapel to pray to St Catherine, the patron saint of spinsters, hoping to find a suitable husband. This tradition adds a touch of romantic folklore to the site’s rich history.
Accessing the chapel involves a half-mile uphill walk from Abbotsbury village, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking vistas and a profound sense of tranquility. Visitors are advised to keep dogs on leads, as the surrounding fields are often grazed by cattle.

After exploring this historic site, visitors can descend into the village and enjoy a well-earned refreshment at The Swan Inn. Our dog-friendly pub offers a warm welcome, hearty meals, and a selection of local ales, making it the perfect spot to relax and reflect on your visit to St Catherine’s Chapel.
